A stadimeter estimates the distance to an object whose height is already known. It does this by measuring the angle formed between the object’s top and bottom as seen through the device. Like a sextant, it uses mirrors to measure an angle between two points, but unlike a sextant, the user first dials in the object’s height. Because it is compact, it works well as a hand-held tool or inside a submarine periscope. It qualifies as an analog computer and belongs to the broader family of optical rangefinders.
